Colour Collection Whitening Gluta BB Cream

At first I thought this BB cream seems a few shades darker than my skin tone but as I applied it on my face, it actually blended well with the colour of my skin. It evened out my skintone and my face matched the color of my neck much closer after using this BB cream. It has light to medium coverage since my acne blemishes are still slightly visible but has lightened significantly too.
Here's my before/after picture using the Colour Collection Gluta Whitening BB Cream alone, no touch ups or concealers. Notice how even-toned and brighter my skin looks after using it.

It has a dewy effect on my skin so it tends to get oily after a few hours so some finishing powder on top of this BB Cream should help settle the oiliness. The BB cream feels light on my skin and I barely feel like I put anything on.

Overall I like the effect of this BB cream. That it has SPF 30, whitening effects, and the hazel extracts it contains that helps heals acnes and blemishes among all the other benefits is definitely a plus on my book! It's reasonably priced at Php 599.00 for a 40ml tube and available through the Tupperware brand.

Foot Appeal: My July BDJBox 7-Day Challenge

Warning: There may be pictures in this post that may gross out some people, so proceed at your own discretion. Thank you.

I received this foot peeling mask Foot Appeal from my July BDJ Box. To be honest, I have never even heard of at-home foot peeling masks before this. My idea of foot masks are the ones done in Nail Salon Spas.

Anyway, after opening the pack, you will see two separate sock-shaped plastics with fluid inside. You have to be careful when cutting the packs open so the fluids don't spill out and wear it on your feet so that your feet are soaking in the fluids. (Sorry I don't have a picture of the plastic socks and the soaking since I had to put my kids to bed and didn't have time to take a pic).

They also provide a piece of sticky tape to fasten the plastic socks on your feet to prevent it from slipping. You also need to wear a regular sock over your Foot Appeal plastic socks and leave it to soak for about 60-90mins.

Notice from my Before picture above that I had a lot of rough spots "kalyo" and cracked heel.
For me, I soaked my feet for only 60 mins since I didn't realize that I had some scrapes on my toe that was stinging from the soak. It is advisable to use the Foot Appeal mask only when you don't have any wounds or broken skin on your feet.

I washed my feet with warm soapy water afterwards. (And I must say that the soaking fluid really stinks!) As if it's like a heavy alcohol/acetone smell. Buy hey, it's the price we pay for beauty. Hehe. I also noticed that I should have took off my nail polish prior to using the mask since the nail polish on my toes had also disintegrated.

Anyway, I didn't notice much the first 2-3 days. But on the 3rd night, I noticed some peeling on my feet...

The 4th-5th day... A LOT more peeling! It was begining to look like my skin was shedding like snake's skin does! And even while I pulled away some of the hanging peeled skin...it wasn't painful at all. By the way, it's best not to forcefully pull off peeling skin to prevent damage to the new skin.

As you can see, those are BIG peeled skin...I was afraid that it was going to hurt but it never did. It was like taking off the top layer and revealing new smoother skin underneath!

After 7 days, there was minimal peeling left and this is what my heel and the bottom of my feet look like...

As you can see on my 7th day...my heels were visibly smoother but the sole of my feet in the mid area still needs some work but has a lot of improvement as well.

Below is a closer inspection of the "before" and "after" pic of my heel for closer comparison:

The "before" pic was taken with flash at night while the "after" pic was takin with morning light streaming through the window. You will notice that the "after" pic of my feet is more pinkish and smooth.

Overall, I think Foot Appeal really works and am quite positive that after subsequent uses, it will help eliminate ALL of my rough spots thoroughly. Since it is suggested in the packaging that you use this every 2-3 months, will be purchasing another two in the next few months again. Am giving one to my hubby for his use and another for mine! Can't believe how different my heels look now! Am LOVIN' it!!! ;)

How about you? Think this is worth a try?

Sleeping Baby

I wake up every morning to this sweet little face and couldn't help but write this for him...

"Little baby by my side,
Sweetly sleeping with happy dreams,
Please stay like this a while more,
my baby don't grow up just yet,
your sweet smell and soft breathe...
makes Mommy want to cuddle you in bed.
Baby don't grow up just yet."

Colour Collection Vitamin E Lipstick

I was lucky enough to nab two Colour Collection Vitamin E Lipsticks from Sample Room the other day...one shade is Kissmark (Matte) and another is Pinkish Nude (Sheer)...a feat in itself since sample stocks run out after just 30 mins.!  But it does pay to be a VIP Sampleroom member. Hehe! ;)

Anyway, this review is about the matte lipstick shade in Kissmark.  Am excited to try out this lipstick since it's my first time to own a Colour Collection lipstick which by the way is a brand by the direct-selling company Tupperware Philippines.

What I like about the lipstick:
• The Vitamin E in the lipstick helps it glide on my lips surprisingly easy and is indeed very matte as you can see in my photo.  I was expecting it to feel dry since it's matte but it actually made my lips feel supple.

• The color pay-off is quiet good.  I only had to swipe the lipstick on my lips once to get the result you see on my picture below.

• I love the nice vibrant pink hue...I think it suits my fair complexion quite nicely and brightens up my face.

• I've had to touch up only once after having lunch due to some lipstick transfer.  So the staying power is pretty good too.

• It has UV ray protection!

Cons? I can't really think of any right now since am pretty happy with the results of this Colour Collection lipstick.  And priced at only Php330, it's a steal!  Will definitely try out their other shades when I get the chance.

Make-up for My Look of the Day:

April Glamourbox: Pixi Magic Tink Tint

My favorite item in the April Glamourbox is the Pixi Magic Tink Tint in Happy Thoughts Pink!
I love the whimsical packaging that merges with Disney's Tinkerbell character. This is the first time I've ever seen and tried a lip tint in twist-up crayon form. And I must say it works fantabulously well! Am now a big fan of this Pixi Magic Tink Tint. Just a swipe or two brings out a pinkish hue on your lips that's unique only to you. It conditioned my lips with a subtle sheen. And no flaky lips all day too! Barely needed any touch ups even after having dinner out with my hubby.
I love how natural it looked on me! And how it instantly brightened my face as seen in the before and after picture below. All I added to my "before" face was the Pixi Magic Tink Tint. No alterations or touch-ups done to the pics. Did you notice how my face seem to have a radiant glow after?

"Think Happy Thoughts as this subtly blooming, super nourishing gel crayon tints your lips in true Tinker Bell style. With shea butter & lip-plumping hyaluronic acid. It will keep your lips in optimum condition."

APRIL BDJ BOX: Revlon Nail Art Expressionist

The April BDJ Box actually came earlier than I expected. Got it on April 13. I immediately opened it as soon as I got home since it was my first BDJ Box and was excited to see the contents.

The product that excited me most was the new Revlon Nail Art Expressionist in Monet. The Revlon Expressionist came with two shades on each end. The creamy green shade came with a normal polish brush while the shimmery lime green shade has the slim nail art brush.
Am quite adventurous when it comes to nail polish colors so I didn't mind the bright greens and yellow shade Monet has. In fact, I actually own an Essie shade very close to the green shade of Monet.

Just the other day, I was actually telling myself how much I wanted to try out doing nail art on myself at home. So when a nail art set was sent as part of the BDJ Box, I was more than excited to try immediately! I played with different designs on each finger. Forgive the rough nail art, it's a first for me. I did a simpler design on my toenails though.

So here goes the 7 day challenge on how well the Revlon Expressionist can withstand a hands-on momma's daily grind ;)
Base Coat: Elianto
Nail Polish: Revlon Expressionist in Monet
Top Coat: Caronia Fast Drying

Day 1:  It was easy to apply the #1 creamy base color in green but was actually quite challenging to do the #2 nail art design on myself.  Specially using my left hand to draw on my right fingers.

And for the record I'd have to mention that am a right-handed stay-at-home-mom who does not have a nanny right now and takes care of two boys...a 5 year old and a toddler. We have a housemaid to do the cooking and cleaning but taking care of the kids is all on me (with some help from hubby). I feed, bathe and play with them. Just so you have a general idea of my everyday activity and get a picture of how this will affect the staying power of the nail polish.
Okay, now that that's out of the way...back to my review... ;)

Day 2: The tip of 3 nails on my right hand shows a little chipping but not so noticeable. Nothing a little touch-up magic can fix. My left hand polished nails are still intact. No touch ups done on my left hand. Toenails lookin as good as it did yesterday.

Day 3: Pretty much the same...some chipping on my right, but my left hand nail polish had some chipping on 3 tips too. Toenails still look fine.

Day 4:  I had to remove the nail polish on my fingers coz there was major chipping on both hands, partly due to some cloth diaper washing I did. I tried re-doing my nails in another design but couldn't get it to look good enough since the #1 cream base side was getting too thick to apply. Maybe partly due to the hot weather? I couldn't seem to get it to look good so after an hour or so, I had to take it off again. Toenails still going strong... No chipping whatsover.

Day 5-7:  My toenails has seen no chipping and I haven't done any touch-ups on all 7 days on my toe's nail polish. They still look as good as Day 1.

Verdict:
The #1 green cream base polish swipes down a pretty solid color, although the consistency seemed to have thickened on the 2nd and 3rd use, making it look too chunky when swiped on nails. The consistency of the #2 yellow shade stayed the same...I love the shimmery effect it has.
I had lots of fun creating "art" on my nails. And for a mom who has almost no time to go out and get nail spa treatments, it has been such a delight for me to be able to play around with my nails at home for a bit.
I love the vibrant summery color of the polish and look forward to my next shopping day to see if Revlon counters are already selling other Revlon Nail Art colors I might be interested in getting.
I guess if you don't do much house chores the polish lasts longer like it did on my toes.
Also, I think I need to look for a new base polish because although Elianto base protects my nails from yellowing, it does make the polish peel easily after a day or two.

So can anyone recommend a better base polish?

My Hair Hero: Snoe Super Fresh

I heard lots of good things about Snoe products lately and found myself going back to Trinoma to check (and purchase) their products every Sunday 3 weekends in a row now. What can I say? Am addicted to their great products. Great quality and cute packaging as well.

So far I got their Argan Oil, a Snoe Rogue Deluxe lipstick in Precious Pout, Hair Heroes Intense Argan Oil and my latest love...the Hair Hero of the day:

Snoe Super Fresh!
Price:   Php 299.00
Product Size:   50 ml

The small green bottle at closer inspection shows a fine shimmery liquid...looks like bottled up magic! :)
I have very thick slightly wavy hair that tends to get dry. It's been almost a year since I've had a color treatment done.

My hair normally looks like this as seen on the upper left picture. The other photos on top right and below are the curls I got the next day...

How I used the Snoe Super Fresh to achieve this look:
1. Spray the product on clean dry hair.
2. Use foam rollers to curl hair and sleep on it overnight.
3. Wake up the next morning, take out rollers and style hair as needed. Voila! Curly locks!

Quite easy, isn't it?

Cons:
1. Kinda pricey for a small bottle.
2. The tight curls lasted around a few hours only and became sexy beach waves for the rest of the day as the bottle promised (which is not so bad and is quite good) but I would have wanted my tight curls to last longer.

Pros:
1. I do love the soft curly locks I achieved after using it.
2. Love the wonderful scent...am tempted to spray it on my hair every hour everyday.
3. I think the small bottle will last a long time since it takes only a few sprays to get the desired waves. And when I do run out of Super Fresh, will definitely restock! :)

Will probably do a review on my Snoe Rogue lipstick soon... since am equally impressed by it too.

You can find Snoe kiosks inside Landmark department store in Trinoma. Or purchase at their online shop http://snoebeauty.shopinas.com/
or check out their websites for more info on other products and check other locations where you can find Snoe products near you:

What I Cried About Today.. A letter to my Aunt who Passed Away

I've recently lost a great aunt...my cousins lost their dear mom and my mom lost her loving sister. It's a sad time for all of us since we didn't see it coming. The only signs of her being sick was her fatigue, which can be easily mistaken for something unalarming.
She was diagnosed with Acquired Aplastic Anemia a few days after her 62nd birthday. She was confined the hospital for about a week, and just last Saturday morning while my family was in Tagaytay, we got the news that she passed away already.
It just hurts a lot...many of us cannot believe she's gone now. And I know many of us are asking "why?".  But we don't know what God's plan is. For her husband and her kids and the rest of the family she herself was not ready to leave behind. We just have to move on and keep memories of her in our hearts.
Many of us were not able to say goodbye and see her alive one last time, so this is my way of getting some closure...

Dear Auntie M.,

Thank you for being a wonderful sister to my mom. I will always be grateful for the way you  candidly advised her, looked out for her and listened to her.
I love the candid photo of you taken at my wedding...how you smiled and cheered for us. You looked so happy for us that day, I truly am touched at how you embraced being our Ninang that day.
We will miss your leche flan, the gigantic prawns you bring to christmas dinners, your ready laugh and fondness of the kids.
We will just miss you.

May you be at peace, Auntie M. Don't worry about us... we will get through somehow. You taught us how to be strong.

My Breast Eczema Ordeal and My brief encounter with Dr. Jack Newman

I almost weaned my 19 month old toddler prematurely. The pain I experienced from breast eczema was so bad, I was biting my lip from trying to bear with the pain everytime my toddler latched on. I came to dread breastfeeding the past month. My baby refuses to drink from a bottle and would cry when I refused to nurse, so I bore the pain for weeks, thinking the sores will eventually go away. I thought I had thrush since almost everyone I know and most of what I've read online pointed my symptoms were that of a bad thrush infection. But after several anti-fungal drug treatments and I wasn't getting any better, I decided it was time to visit Dr. Christina Bernardo at Medical City. She's one of the highly recommended Gynecologists/Pediatrician here in Manila who specializes in breastfeeding and lactation problems.

My symptoms:
1.  Sore & cracked nipples that didn't improve even with the use of several good nipple creams.
2.  Dry flaky skin around nipple and areola.
3.  Sores developing on the sides of nipples due to tearing when baby latches on to sensitive and dry nipples.
4.  Occassional bleeding due to the cracks.
5.  Incredible (sometimes shooting) pain during breastfeeding due to the sores ("singaw"-like wounds) that is isolated near nipple/areola area.

After my visit to Dr. Bernardo, it was such a relief to know that I only had severe breast eczema and not thrush as I initially thought. Turns out that thrush has symptoms almost similar to breast eczema except that the shooting pain you feel usually radiates from the nipple towards the back of the breast near your armpit. And with thrush, your baby usually has white spots or sores in his mouth as well...something which my S didn't have. She prescribed oral antibiotics to help the sores heal faster and a topical steroid/anti-inflammatory cream to be applied on the affected areas. She asked me to take the antibiotics and use the cream for seven days.

I was so thrilled when I noticed an immediate improvement after the first application of the cream. After seven days, my nipples looked normal again! The eczema made my nipples look so dreadful for so many weeks that I've begun to forget what my normal nipples looked like! And the best thing? My baby and I can finally breastfeed pain-free after so long :)

The downside...eczema doesn't clear up easily. My areola started to get dry and itchy again with signs of the flaky skin returning a day after I stopped using the steroidal cream.

I was dreading the return of the eczema again and was afraid continous use of the steroidal cream would be bad for my baby as well. That was when I stumbled upon Dr. Jack Newman's facebook account and email add. Almost everyone who researched about breastfeeding would know Dr. Newman and his wonderfully informative latch-on videos. From what I've observed, he was generously giving advice to anyone who posted breastfeeding questions on his FB wall. So I tried emailing him the details of my symptoms and concern. What have I got to lose? I was desperate for advice. I was so thrilled when he responded within an hour after I sent him my email! Dr. Jack Newman responded!!! Wow! ;)

He reassured me that it was safe to use the steroidal cream every 2 to 3 days and see what works for me until the eczema clears up. He also suggested that I could use olive oil to help with the dry patches that may appear. So far, the olive oil and occassional use of the cream helps in keeping the eczema at bay.

To contact Dr. Jack Newman, in case your breastfeeding concerns are not addressed by his online sources, you may contact him here at the IBC site.

Dr. Christina Bernardo can be reached through The Bernardo Clinic, or you may contact her assistant Jane thru 09228216012.

My Lip Miracle in a pot!

Having dry chapped lips has always been a perpetual problem for me. You know those moments when you try on lipsticks in mall counters and suddenly notice your chapped flaky lips in the mirror?Making it embarrassing to try on different lippies since they'd all look awful either way?

That was until I discovered Ellana Lipscrub while browsing one of my favorite online stores...
Caleb's Closet Ecostore.  It's a lipscrub made of sugar, vitamin E, shea and murumuru oils in Grapefruit variant. I tried it on my parched lips as soon as it arrived in my doorstep and was happily surprised how it left my lips soft and smooth. Not a dry flake in sight! The sugar scrubs away the dry flakes gently and the grapefruit sugary taste makes it a pleasant experience.

This will be a definite mainstay in my pursebag from now on. No more flakes, just soft kissable yummy lips from now on!

By the way, Multiply is having a special 20% discount on all purchases in their Trusted Sellers online shops. Just encode PH-TWENTYOFF in the discount code box upon checkout. Or try encoding PH-CHECKOUT to get Php250 off for at least a Php500 worth of purchase. Promo discount til February 15 only. Let's shop!!! :)

My Second turns One: Born on the Fourth of July

Syoti just turned one today...am feeling nostalgic. Feels like only yesterday when I was hoping that Sean will not come out for at least another week coz we haven't finished moving to our new room downstairs and renovations are a little behind. And of course, maybe coz of the stress, I woke up last year at 6:00am on this same day...the Fourth of July and realized I was bleeding and knew I was having contractions. So yes...my second boy was born on the fourth of July. Some people teased we should have named him Tom Cruise for his movie...but we settled for Sean Connor...no joke. I like James Bond eh!

One year passed by so fast, I am barely ready for it to be over. I still want my baby to hold and cuddle! I want my baby in my arm, to nurse and hug and need me to carry him. But he's one now...and he's already excited to learn how to walk. He would run if he could but settles for walking one or two steps and grudgingly thumps his butt down on the floor with a whine of protest...so eager to grow up and start walking away from me (pout pout) ;p

All I can do now is savor each passing moment with him. I know he won't be a baby for long. My 4 year old is living testament to how fast they grow.  He's been sleeping with me every night of this past year, I've nursed him to sleep and through sickness and booboos, rocked him to sleep even if his heaviness made my arms sore just to soothe his sleepy crying. So all I can do now is cherish his babyness for I will surely miss it in the days to come.

Toddler & the not-so-New Baby

I always thought that sibling rivalry meant that older siblings become jealous over his new baby brother or sister by openly showing dislike towards the baby, fighting with the baby or pulling parents away from baby to get attention all to himself again.

But it isn't always like that. What commonly happens is something like in my 3.5 yrs  old toddler's case...the first few days when we brought home baby#2 seemed uneventful. My toddler seemed to adore the baby a lot and was proud to now be appointed the all awesome title of "Ahia" or big brother.

After two weeks, the nightmare started. I guess A started to realize that the baby is not only a new playmate (whom he actually had limited access to for now)...but someone who needs constant care and who takes a lot of mommy's time away from him. It doesn't help that A is also having cough/colds that time so we try to keep him away from baby...and since I have to be with baby all the time the first few weeks to establish the breastfeeding process, he had to stay away from me too.

A began to act up more than usual. I mean, he usually has his normal toddler tantrums. But this time it was 10x a lot worse than usual. He would scream and cry about everything. Even something as little like picking out clothes, he'd scream at his yaya (nanny) and would throw stuff at her in frustration. We'd hear him screaming about something almost every hour every day. It was becoming exhausting. At first, I'd just get really angry at him and punish his bad behavior. But after a month or so of this, we realized that his mega tantrums were actually his way of showing his jealousy over the new baby.
He was directing his anger, sadness and frustration at us and not the new baby. (Which I guess is better than having him dislike his baby brother.)
He loves his baby brother very much and loves to constantly shower him with hugs and kisses. He even knows how to be gentle with him. That is why I never thought he was actually feeling resentful of the time we give to his baby brother. We actually took his feelings for granted. An article I read about The New Baby in gentleparents.com was really helpful in opening my eyes to what a toddler feels when a new baby comes into their life.  I wish I had been more sensitive to his feelings right from the beginning.

When we started to consciously give A more solo time, he began to change his attention-seeking bad behaviors instantly. He'd still get those super sensitive crying spells issues when he'd cry over little things and would now know how to pout when I am cranky and snap at him for being too "makulit". But he's become better behaved now (that baby is 8 months old) and has come a long way from the way he behaved the first few months. He still loves baby to bits and baby adores his big brother so much. No one can make baby readily laugh like his big brother can. And it's so cute how he looks at his brother with idolizing awe.

It's hard to balance time for both kids specially when I only have one yaya to help with both and breastfeeding baby makes me the primary caregiver to baby 2.  But finding more time to give attention to the older toddler is essential to all our well-being. Turns out all he needed was the extra attention to reassure himself that we still love him even though there are times we may be busy with the baby's needs. It takes a lot of patience (which I sometimes lack) and time but what are parent's for anyway?

Now, we're trying to figure out how to make A stop babbling jibberish at times like he's imitating the baby. He growls and grunts sometimes now when he's in a bad mood and wants to be carried too when we go out (coz I always carry the baby with me on a sling). I guess this is what they call "reverting to babyhood" in older siblings. I guess am just glad he hasn't reverted back to pooping in his pants again like I've heard some kids do too.

Breastfeeding No. 2

The moment I first held my second baby, S, while I was at the hospital recovery room a few minutes after giving birth and felt the warmth of his body as he suckled with gusto...I knew everything will be alright this second time around.

You see, with my eldest son...I was a naive new mom who thought taking care of a baby and breastfeeding would be easy-breezy. Ha! After bringing home A, the sleepless nights coupled with A's problem with nipple confusion (the hospital gave him bottled formula milk and whisked him away after he was born. I wasn't even allowed to touch him despite the fact that I had a very fast and normal delivery) crumbled my determination to breastfeed. Sleep-deprived and depressed, I soon caved in and fed A formula and whatever breastmilk I could find time to express in between the every two hours feeding. I didn't know anything about the challenges of breastfeeding, didn't know there was so much local support groups and online help to be found.

So with baby S, hubby and I decided to change to a breastfeeding-friendly hospital to ensure that right from the start, we get a better chance at being successful in breastfeeding baby #2. We also went to several seminars at the Medela House and read about every available information that could help equip us this time. Having breastfeeding mom-friends helped a lot too.

We didn't expect S to be such a healthy 8.14 pounder since it was a pretty easy one hour labor and normal delivery. But although S was a strong suckler, he started to lose some weight and by 2 weeks, we were afraid he was looking a bit scrawnier than the way he looked on Day 1. He was having a bit of a hard time latching on and for two weeks I had to bare the pain I was experiencing from his improper latch.

We strived hard and eventually, the pain went away, and he was finally gaining weight again. Yes, there were moments of doubts and feelings like "when will this constant feeding ever stop?" phase. But with my experience with A, I knew time will pass and everything will not last for long. They grow up so fast and changes seem to happen in a blink of an eye.

S at Day 1

S  lost some weight at Month 1, but after continuous faith in breastfeeding....
S began to gain some weight here shown above in Month 2...

Month 3

Month 4- Look at those chubby cubby cheeks! Am proud to say it's all from exclusive breastfeeding! Not one drop of formula here :)

7 months

It was such a joy to know that I have managed to nourish my once scrawny baby into a healthy exclusively breastfed baby for 8 months now and still going strong :) It does get easier as they grow older. We hit some minor roadblocks when he was teething (which will blog about next time) but with patience and persistence, we passed it. Still manage to take one day at a time and hope to breastfeed for as long as baby is willing. :)

Eastwood Breastfeeding Station

My baby was becoming fussy and needed to feed real soon a few minutes after we got to Eastwood. I was looking for some sort of coffee shop or unoccupied couch nearby to feed S and was somewhat surprised to stumble upon a Breastfeeding Station in Eastwood Mall. Found it on the 3rd flr in the midst of the baby toys/clothes shops. I saw the sign hanging from the mall ceiling and followed the arrow...there was a somewhat long hallway (which was good since you get to be far from the noisy crowd) before I found the frosted glass door of the Breastfeeding Station.

The quiet and cozily lit walled room is a bit small but since am the only one using it, I can't complain about it being too crowded. It seemed relatively clean. There were 3 solo couches with some pillows, 3 curtains you can use to shade yourself in case you want some privacy and one small side table, a magazine rack and a big wall mirror at one corner.

They also have a changing table in the room with a covered trash bin on the side.

The downside...their inverter type A/C was dripping water on the side of the wall and there was a pool of water forming. Some more tables and a clean sink with running water to wash your hands inside the breastfeeding station would be nicer than having to go out and run to the end of the hallway to wash your hands in their restroom.
Other than that, knowing there's a breastfeeding station in Eastwood makes it one of the malls me and my family could frequent knowing there would be a quiet place I can access to feed my easily distracted baby.

Tot's To-Do in Tagaytay

My toddler just turned 3 years old last February, and I'm now 5 and a half months pregnant with my second child. Am a bit anxious about how he'll react to his new baby brother once he's born. Will he feel some sibling jealousy? Will he be a good big brother? Is he mature enough to understand how a baby can demand much of my time?

I thought it would be good to take every opportunity we can get to create special bonding moments with him while he's still our only child for now. So when a friend of mine gave me a Gift Certificate that will give us a chance to stay overnight at Sunrise Holiday Mansions in Tagaytay, we took it.

On The Road...Ilog Maria
From Quezon City, we left at 8:30AM and drove through the Nagtahan Bridge in Manila and went straight to the Skyway and SLEX (South Luzon Expressway) towards the Sta. Rosa exit where we passed through Silang and followed the road straight to Tagaytay.

Before reaching our destination though, we passed through Ilog Maria Honey Bee Farm at Km.47 in Aguinaldo Highway. I always try to visit this place whenever we're in Tagaytay. I love the scent of their honey infused organic soaps that you can smell as soon as you alight from your vehicle. We reached the farm at around 10:30AM.

We, of course, bought some honey...they only sell one container per guest. An average worker bee lives for 40 days and a single bee makes at most only 4 tsps of honey in it's lifetime. So you can just imagine how precious honey is to our farmers.

A must-have is their lovely Lavender soap whose fragrance helps soothe and relax the senses. I always stock up on these when I go there. Some of the other stuff we purchased are the IM Honey & Propolis Shampoo, the Honey Propolis Throat Spray, and the Propolis Ointment (which I always use to rub on my tot's insect bites. It helps reduce the swollen insect bitten areas on his skin).

My son had fun checking out the bees (at a safe distance) and even made friends with their docile farm cat--which was the first thing that caught his attention when we got there.

After we had our fill of shopping for soaps and honey, our tummy's were rumbling and so we took to the nearest restaurant  a few kilometers from Ilog Maria.

Gourmet's?...Not Really
I was expecting the same lovely old cottage house feel of the Gourmet Cafe we know from 3 years ago and was sadly met with a newly built white walled establishment and an interior wall ridden of modern paintings. The place did look clean, fresh and classy but I still like the older more homey version that suited Tagaytay more.

Even their menu has changed. They served this Filipino Buffet which seemed too much for us priced at Php600 per person. We ordered ala carte instead. My mom & aunt ordered their Chicken BBQ  for Php175. It was way overpriced for a one-piece chicken thigh that's no bigger than the palm of my hand. It came with a cup of rice and pickled veggies. The chicken tastes so-so, and most parts of my aunt's chicken that were near the bone looked uncooked and bloody.

My picky toddler shared my mom's chicken and disliked it so much, it took him 15 minutes to chew each spoonful...and he only ate two spoonfuls til I gave up feeding him since he looked so bored, he might as well be chewing rubber. Ended up giving him double his milk bottle for lunch instead.

My hubby and I opted for the tenderloin steak (around Php350). The meal came with the same rice and pickled veggies (I abhor pickled veggies! So didn't touch those except for one cauliflower which I tasted out of curiosity and found that to be too sour). We asked them for a medium well steak (pinkish but cooked well, not bloody) and it turned out medium rare...I spent the whole afternoon wondering if it was going to be bad for my preggy tummy eating that bloody rare steak for lunch. It was also quite bland and only tasted better when we asked for some A1 sauce and poured some on them. The steaks at Everything At Steak tastes a hundred times better!

Alfonso before Sunrise (Sunrise Part I)
We dropped off my mom & aunt at Alfonso Hotel at the Buck Estate, which we booked on-line for a cheaper price (Php2060) as compared to booking it straight from the hotel itself (Php2564) since their on-line partners are giving 20% off till March 31 bookings. We left them to freshen up as we went straight to check-in at our hotel just one block away.

Sunrise Holiday Mansion was surprisingly a nice place. Was surprised to find that we had a microwave oven, mini refrigerator and cable tv in our room. The airconditioning seems a little faulty though since it was slightly noisy but isn't much of a nuisance, although it alternates from giving off super cold air and almost low cool breeze. Our room faces the cafe and pool area so not much of the Tagaytay cool breeze can be expected and since Sunrise is located on the other side of the road downhill, Taal Lake is not visible at all.

Finding Paradizoo
After checking in, we immediately went back our way towards the Rotonda (Tagaytay Circle) direction to find Paradizoo. We left our hotel at around 2:00 PM. Heard from other blogs it was complicated to find since their website map directions was far from accurate so we wanted a head start knowing the farm closes at 4:00 PM.

Note 1: From Splendido/Buck Estate going towards Palace in the Sky/Tagaytay Highlands/Rotonda direction: you should pass a Satellite dish on your right side and the Brgy Asisan/Paradizoo road sign is on your left. If you pass Bag of Beans, you've already missed the turn.

Note 2: From the Rotonda going towards Sonya's/Buck Estate: You'll pass Bag of Beans on you right side, then up ahead watch for the Residence Inn/Paradizoo sign (that can be too small and washed out to see from this side) or to be more accurate, the Brgy. Asisan Archway. Turn right under the archway and head straight to Paradizoo.

Enter that road and go straight. Follow the road straight until the end of the road with a right turn (takes around 30 mins to reach the right turn), turn right there and pass a small bridge and you'll see Paradizoo very soon.

Paradizoo is a Farm/Zoo that is partners with Residence Inn. So you can visit both places for Php199 or just visit once place like we did at Paradizoo for Php99. My son got in for free.

The first thing we saw was this really cute Pony near the entrance. My son had a blast sitting on the Pony and having his picture taken with the pony. Too bad he was still too small to really ride it and tour some part of the farm on it.

The Pony at the entrance to Paradizoo

Little did we know, that might be the only nice part of the farm we saw. The first part of the farm is an Animal Farm where we saw goats, sheeps, cows, carabaos and even several gigantic Arabian Camels.  Be careful though, whenever you see animals, be sure to see lots of manure and poop scattered around the floor you're stepping on. Dunno why there are poops outside the enclosure. They should keep the place cleaner. Although, you'll notice upon entering the farm the lack of farm people on hand to assist you. In a way, it's nice to be able to explore the 7-hectare farm on your own pace without someone pestering you with details every step of the way. But they should keep up with the mess the animals make. So it's always a good idea to wear jeans and closed shoes while touring these farms.

After the animals, we enjoyed the Vegetable farm where we harvested with our own two hands. My son got to pick out some tomatoes off the vines too! We plucked out several purple and green lettuce and saw several different basils, herbs, and pepper plants. We met a Manong there that helped us out with the picking and was kind enough to provide us with some plastic bags to put our harvests in. We had to carry around the veggies all around the rest of the farm til we reach the end where there's this snack bar cottage with a cashier that weighs your harvest and charge you a very cheap price for the veggies to take home.
The vast Vegetable Farm in Paradizoo where we picked our veggies!

We also saw a small Bee Farm, and a modest Butterfly Farm after the animals. After which we trugded along downhill enjoying the strong cool breeze which had my tot clinging to me for dear life in fear of getting blown away with the wind. :)

There was another set area of wild boars and piglets that were kinda cute. Lots of poop again. Then some more goats. Then finally the snack bar with the cutest little puppy I've ever seen who came bounding to greet my son. I think the puppies are the owner's pets.

We paid for our veggies and decided to get some snacks soon. It's 3:30PM by now.

B.O.B spells Yum!
Bag of Beans never fails to satisfy the hungry traveler. After the disappointing lunch we had at Gourmet's, this place has more than made up for our cravings of real food and the Tagaytay garden feel.

My mom ordered Fish & Fries, I had a slice of Shepherd's Pie, my hubby had the Country Breakfast, and my aunt the Pork BBQ meal.

The Fish & Fries were really good. Four generous pieces of crispy crusted exterior wrapped arounda meaty moist fish to be dipped in their onion/dill mayo dip with big fries on the side (which my son enjoyed immensely).

The Shepherd's Pie was good too but I liked their Steak & Mushroom pie better. The Country Breakfast comes with two pancakes (that seems a bit cakey & not to our taste), two eggs, two sausages & some bacon crisps.  The BBQ meal will satisfy any bbq craving...two big sticks of pork bbq with sweet marinade that won't disappoint.

I would have loved to have their yummy blueberry cheesecake but was getting a bit full already and wanted to enjoy our dinner at Sonya's later on.

Date Night @ Sonya's
My little man ran out of steam and was quietly dozing off even before we reached my mom's hotel. So we left him there with his bottled milk and went off on a date...just hubby and me.

Ahhh...Sonya's Garden. The place to be in Tagaytay. The lush gardens and the cool Tagaytay atmosphere brings back memories of the cozy second honeymoon we spent there a few years ago.

We went inside one of their many dining areas and sat down on a table covered with crisp white linen cloth with dainty embroidered flowers. Fresh blooms decorate the vases and tiny twinkling lights all around the inner garden with mini falls in front of us.

The waiters were all very accomodating and are quick to service. We had their sit down buffet dinner for Php 610 per person. It includes Salads, Breads, Pasta and a nice dessert which you wash down with their fresh cool dalandan juice. A more comprehensive menu can be viewed at their website.

What I love about the food here is that everything is made fresh from their gardens and kitchen. The garden plucked salads and the dressings, the freshly baked bread from their ovens and the home-made pasta with all the delightful toppings you can choose from.

Sadly, we had to leave sooner than later to pick up my son and head on back to our hotel.

Sunrise at Sunset (Sunrise Part II)
When we picked up my son at my mom's room at Alfonso Hotel, I took this chance to check out their accomodation. They got a Twin room with two single beds. Although the beds seem smaller than normal to me, their room was cozy, clean and comfortable for the price we got. They had cable TV too, hot shower and clean toilet. And even an electric stand fan in their room, which seemed weird to me at first since they had airconditioning too.
Apparently, the hotel thought of everything when they provided the electric fan since my mom related to us the next morning that they didn't use the Aircon in their room that night and just opened their windows to let the cool air in and just used the fan. Their room overlooked the mountains so it was quite breezy and cool, unlike our room at Sunrise which face the inner hotel and pool area.

Back to our hotel at Sunrise Mansions, we started to settle in and I decided to bathe my son in their shower/tub. But minutes into bathing, and just when I was about to finish rinsing my son, the power went out in our room. My 3 year old was scared of the dark so it was hard to tell him to stay in the bathroom so he won't catch cold while I get the flash light I brought with me. Good thing we had the emergency light turned on that time. At first I thought the hotel was observing Earth Hour but then the lights outside my window told me otherwise. We were the only room without lights on. The hallway had lights on too.
I called the front desk to tell them about the problem but it took them 20 minutes to get someone to us...and that person didn't even know we had a power problem since he just handed us the toilet paper rolls we asked for an hour ago. I called my hubby who was down in the lobby area checking his emails since that's the only area with wi-fi. My hubby was the one who got the lights back on by switching the circuit breaker back on (yes, there's a circuit breaker inside our room). Turns out we figured that having the heater on in the shower somehow overloads their circuits, since it happened again a second time as I was taking a shower myself. We didn't ask for another room since it was already late and we're all tired and ready for bed by that time and as long as we didn't have the TV, aircon and the heater on all at once, the power didn't fail again.

We had complimentary breakfast for two the next day. Each of us had a plateful of two eggs, two slices of american ham, and rice with  a cup of joe for my hubby and orange juice for me. A generous fruit platter in a mix of watermelon, pineapple, orange and melon slices was also served. My son had a few bites of our ham and his favorite watermelons for breakfast too.

The breakfast area overlooks the pool and my son decided to throw a tantrum about wanting to go for a swim. There were some kids swimming that time and that made him more eager to persuade us to let him swim. The morning air was still a bit cool so I only agreed to let him splash his feet at the pool side with his daddy. He seems happy enough to be able to do that so I agreed on the compromise.

Horseback-riding @ breakneck Pricing
After we checked-out of our hotels, we decided to drop by Bag of Beans again to buy some of their yummy cinnamon rolls, then continued on to find that horseback riding area somewhere between B.O.B. and Leslie's.

Again, the area is expected to have horse manure all over so better watch your step. They have bicycle rides, carriage rides and horseback. The carriage rides go for Php300 per hour while the horseback rides are Php 200 per hour.

We should have opted for the carriage rides since I might have been able to ride that with my son and we could have gotten value for our money, instead of having him ride horseback with my mom. Since after only 10 minutes of riding, he suddenly wanted to stop, get off the horse or have me ride with him. Again, being preggy has a lot of limitations and horseback riding is definitely one of them. The caretaker insists we pay full price even though they only rode the horse for 10 mins. We grudgingly obliged since my son was having one of his 'moments' and the Manong was taking advantage of that fact. No other choice there.

Next time, I think it would have been better to let him ride the friendlier looking horses at Residence Inn or the pony we saw at Paradizoo.

Leslie's at Last
We reached Leslie's for lunch at 11:45AM, and all the good seats near the Taal lake view are already taken. As soon as we took our seats at the back end of the restaurant near the entrance, people seem to have suddenly come in droves and the line in the front desk never seem to diminish. And soon enough, there were no more seats to be had but plenty of people still waiting patiently in line to get a bite to eat.

It took them 20 mins to deliver our food, but considering how jam-packed the place was, that was pretty ok. We were very satisfied with everything we ordered...Sizzling Tuna Belly, Pork Sisig, Inihaw na Liempo (Grilled Pork Belly), Pinakbet con Lechon and of course, you can't go without ordering their Bulalo Special Soup.

We all loved the Iced Tea Shake too. My son couldn't get enough of it!

The waiter was even nice enough to cater to our request for extra corn cob slices since the Bulalo soup contained only 2 slices and it seems like that was the only thing my toddler fancied eating that time.

Damage: Php 2,600 for 4 adults with big appetites and a toddler.

Stop-overs on the way home
On the way home, we stopped over Rowena's for some of their mini tarts and buko pie. Their place is packed too. I think many of us are already tired of Colette's buko pies and Rowena's freshly made pies and tarts serves as a great alternative to the over-commercialized ones from Colette's.

We stopped over some more at the many stalls that sell those nice flowers in small plastic pots...I got 3 marigolds for Php100. We also got some papayas and bananas at neighboring stalls on the road.

The very last stop we made along the way was this small Toscana Farms shop set-up beside this Caltex gas station. They sell the most amazing cherry tomatoes, big-sized tomatoes and sweet bell peppers. You can't not buy anything once you've seen their veggies. We got some to toss into the lettuce we harvested from Paradizoo for a home-made salad once we get home.

The way home seems to be faster than the way going there. And it does seem like we were always in a hurry to go from one place to another to fit everything into our agenda. Everyone is tired once we get home, and it's nice to sleep in my own bed once more. But then I've always enjoyed being in Tagaytay, and would be back again soon.

Searching for the Better Tot Toothpaste

Finding the right flouride toothpaste for kids seem easy enough since we have so many choices with varying flavors from different brands. But with a then two-year old toddler like mine, those choices are pretty limited. When it comes to a picky tot who insists on having his way and is pretty much a stickler to routines and familiar stuff, choosing the best toothpaste is never easy.

My son got used to using Sansfluo orange flavor for over a year now. And after his first dentist visit, we were advised to switch to toothpastes with flouride since he has milky build-up on his teeth due to prolonged bottled milk drinking. The flouride will help diminish the build-up and prevent future cavities from forming.

We tried giving him the Hapee kiddie toothpaste in orange flavor and Colgate bubblegum flavor...and his initial reaction was to cry and wipe his tongue with his fingers frantically to both toothpastes. He didn't like the new flavors or the minty taste and every time we even mentioned the word "brush"... he'd quickly hide his face under the pillows.

So I set out to buy all the different types and flavors of kiddie toothpastes available in Watsons and the Mercury Drug Store. We were on a mission to find the best tasting flouride toothpaste with the least minty flavor.

Since the Colgate flavors seem to be more minty compared to Hapee..we decided to skip the other Colgate flavors and bought Hapee grape, apple, cookies n- cream and Oral-B Stages berry bubble. All of which met with the same distasteful reaction.

Finally, I found a Tom's brand toothpaste in Strawberry flavor at Healthy Options. The strawberry flavor taste quite yummy...like strawberry yogurt without the soury yogurt taste. And the best part? Almost no minty taste at all!

The downside? After about a month of using the Tom's Strawberry toothpaste, his teeth hasn't seen any improvement and the whitish milky build-up on his front teeth seemed to have progressed into full blown cavities. It seems like Tom's wasn't helping.

Since my tot seems to have gotten used to brushing his teeth by now, it was time to switch to another toothpaste. This time we tried Fluocaril Strawberry. This has a very slight minty taste that my son didn't seem to mind by now. And the best part, after a few weeks, his teeth has improved and the yellowish parts on his front teeth even seems to have receded.

After 3 initial visits to his dentists, now he's 3 yrs. old...he was finally brave enough to have his teeth cleaned and treated. We're still in the process of fixing his teeth and it will probably take a few more visits to get all the cavities patched up. But then, at least we're on the road to semi-perfect teeth once more! :)
